Although Ezra Productions specializes in video production in Los Angeles, we are suckers for a story that brings out the humanity in science. In 1977, NASA launched two golden records with shelf lives of one billion years into space aboard twin Voyager space crafts traveling in different directions. The records are time capsules of sorts, containing a curated group of sounds and pictures that illustrate a story of the human race, the emotions we are capable of having, and the things we hold dear. A cultural Noah’s Ark, if you will.
In the words of Jimmy Carter, “The records are presents to life forms on other planets from our small, distant world, a token of our sounds, our science, our images, our music, our thoughts and our feelings.”
NASA appointed a committee headed by scientists Carl Sagan and Annie Druyan, to execute the “Voyager Interstellar Message Project.” On the record they decided included sounds such as the wind, a kiss, a mother’s first words to her baby, and the heartbeat of a woman madly in love. They sent music ranging from Mozart to Navaho Indian chanting. They sent visuals, ranging from the DNA structure to a family portrait to rush hour traffic in Thailand. Although they seem mundane, the sounds and images they preserved could be immensely valuable thousands of years from now because they’ll provide insight into what life was like in 1977.
What if we started passing on the lessons we’ve learned and the memories we’ve accumulated throughout our lives, or even left words of comfort to those we would inevitably leave behind?
